Tāne Mahuta, the powerful and benevolent god of the forest, bringer of knowledge and wisdom, who liberated the world from the confinement of darkness.
The one who separated the earth from the sky and brought light to the world. He created the trees and the birds and is the protector of the forest and all that grows within it.
He is the giver of life and the one who ensures the balance between the physical and spiritual realms. He adorned the heavens and descended with baskets filled with knowledge, wisdom, and understanding for humanity.
In this piece, Tāne is portrayed in wheku form, a stylized and symbolic representation of a human face. He is set against a backdrop of intricate interwoven puhoro elements to symbolize his domain of the natural world, flora and fauna.
Together, these elements convey a powerful and majestic king who reigns supreme over a diverse and thriving forest kingdom.
